Driving North to the Cape

Hi all. Today I woke to some crazy rain on the van roof and then beautiful rainbows.

Leaving the Kauri Coast holiday park and heading to meet Tane Mahuta. Tane is 2000 years old, and looking awesome!!! The drive was amazing, the bush coming right down the road on both sides. Not many cars around made for a great trip deep in the NZ bush.

Then driving right up to Cape Reinga for my first time. It was amazing. I loved it, no-one there and the sun was out. Went down to the lighthouse and just took in that I was at the top of NZ. The oceans were so powerful and with the wind it made for some mean waves. There was a sign up there with the distances to cities all over the world and Bluff was only 1452kms away. What kinda tiki tour am I doing?

I then turned to thinking, well this is where I will start to run down to Auckl and and I started getting excited so ran back up to the van (which yes it was up) – not a bad way to start the final leg. There were alot of hills to follow too as I worked my way down. Sorting out where we will stay and getting to know some locals and get schools behind us.
On the way I stopped in at Te Kao which we will be stopping at. I met a lovely lady named Bonnie at the local supermarket, she was great and is helping us out by getting the word out – thank you very much for taking the time Bonnie.

As it was getting dark and I had no idea where I was heading. I made it to Awanui and found Norfolk Motel & Campervan Park where Kim (owner) was waiting with a smile to welcome me. She was great and so nice,  I look forward to staying there when we come back though in October. Thank you Kim.
